German military cemetery of Dionysus - Rapentose 1939-1945, Military cemetery in Dionysus, Greece.
The German military cemetery of Dionysus is a burial ground for soldiers located about 30 kilometers northeast of Athens near Mount Pentelikon. The site contains twelve underground crypts arranged across three walled courtyards.
The cemetery was established as a burial ground for 9,973 German soldiers, with 68 from World War I and 9,905 from World War II, who died during military operations in mainland Greece. It preserves the memory of those lost in combat across two major conflicts.
Stone tablets above each crypt display the names and dates of those buried, while memorial plaques honor 843 soldiers whose remains were never found. These inscriptions allow visitors to acknowledge the individual people behind the historical record.
The cemetery is accessed through a central memorial courtyard and displays informational signs in both German and Greek. The signage helps visitors navigate the grounds and understand the site's history.
Each of the twelve underground crypt chambers measures 7 meters (23 feet) by 7 meters and holds the remains of up to 850 military personnel. These spacious underground chambers demonstrate the enormous scale of losses from the conflict.
