East Attica Regional Unit

East Attica Regional Unit is an administrative area in Attica with thirteen municipalities spread from north to south. This area includes Athens International Airport and Rafina port, along with many smaller towns and settlements throughout the region.

This administrative region was created in 1987 as part of Greece's administrative reform, replacing the old prefecture system. The change brought governance closer to local communities through a reorganized structure.

The municipalities here hold many ancient temples and archaeological sites that show how people have lived in this area since classical times. Walking through traditional settlements, you can still see how these places remain connected to their past.

The area is easy to reach through the airport in the east or the port in the north and has good road connections. You will find accommodations, restaurants, and local shops throughout, especially in larger towns and near Athens.

Marathon, one of the municipalities here, is where a famous battle took place in 490 BC that later inspired the name of the modern marathon race. This historical connection makes the place significant for sports enthusiasts and history lovers around the world.
