Rododafni kastello, Protected chateau in Penteli, Greece.
Rododafni kastello is a protected castle in Penteli Municipality positioned on a slope of Mount Pentelicus. The structure incorporates local marble from nearby quarries and functions today as a cultural center and library operated by the municipality.
Construction began in 1840 for Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun, Duchess of Plaisance, who provided financial and social support to the Greek revolution. The residence was built during a period when Greece was consolidating its independence.
The building displays a rare neogothic style that stood apart from typical 19th-century Greek architecture of its time. This unusual design choice makes it visually distinct among structures built in the region during that period.
The castle sits along Lord Byron street on the mountainside and is accessible to visitors during cultural events. The building can accommodate large gatherings for exhibitions and community activities.
Local stories tell that the Duchess intentionally left parts of the structure unfinished, believing that completing it would bring her death. This tale adds a layer of mystery to the building that visitors sometimes discover during their exploration.
