Avdira Municipality, Administrative division in Xanthi Regional Unit, Greece
Avdira Municipality spreads across the coastal area of Xanthi Regional Unit in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, extending to the Aegean Sea. The administrative area includes several small communities with a combined population of under 1000 residents.
The area takes its name from ancient Abdera, founded in 544 BC by colonists from Teos fleeing Persian invasion. The ancient settlement grew into a significant coastal trading center over the following centuries.
The area contains traditional villages and archaeological remains scattered across the landscape from different periods of Greek history. Walking through these settlements, you notice how the local communities adapted to living near the sea and how building styles changed over time.
The area is accessible by road from Xanthi and has several small villages that can be explored on foot. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking and exploring the landscape and archaeological sites.
The ancient city of Abdera stood out in the Delian League for its substantial wealth accumulated through maritime trade. This prosperity allowed the city to construct major public buildings and support philosophers and scholars who lived there.
