Lake Karla

Lake Karla extends across 37 square kilometers at an elevation between 60 to 80 meters above sea level, bordered by Pelion and Maurovouni mountains.

The lake, originally named Boibeis after the ancient city of Boibe, underwent complete drainage in 1962 for agricultural purposes before its restoration began in recent decades.

Local fishermen maintained a traditional lifestyle, residing in reed huts on the lake for nine months annually before the 1962 drainage altered their customs.

Visitors can access the lake through road networks connecting to major Thessaly towns, with the nearby town of Kanalia offering essential services.

The restoration project represents a 100 million ECU investment to recreate 50 square kilometers of wetland, supporting diverse wildlife including protected bird species.
