Cave of Melidoni, Archaeological cave site in Melidoni Rethymni, Greece

The cave extends through multiple chambers featuring natural limestone formations, with the entrance marked by a natural stone arch at 220 meters elevation.

In 1824, Ottoman forces sealed and suffocated 370 locals and 30 warriors who had taken refuge in the cave during a military conflict.

The cave chambers contain an ossuary memorial holding the remains of the 1824 victims, standing as a testament to Cretan resistance.

Visitors can access the site from April through October between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM, with entry fees of 4 euros for adults.

Archaeological excavations revealed bronze tools, pottery, and religious artifacts dating from the Neolithic period through the Roman era within the cave chambers.
