Faneromeni monastery, Salamina, Orthodox monastery in Salamina, Greece
Faneromeni monastery is an Orthodox convent located in a pine forest on the eastern side of Salamina Island, set just above sea level near the coast. The complex features a church with religious frescoes and residential quarters for the community of nuns.
The monastery was established in 1682 by Lampros Kanelos, later revered as Saint Laurentios, and became a refuge during the Greek Revolution of 1821. It was converted into a convent in 1944, marking the beginning of its current form and purpose.
The monastery takes its name from an apparition of the Virgin Mary, as visitors can observe in the religious imagery throughout its spaces. The nuns living there keep Orthodox traditions alive through daily prayers and the work they do.
The monastery sits in a natural seaside setting and visitors should be ready for narrow paths through pine vegetation. The best time to visit is on cooler days, as shade is limited and the sun is direct.
Artist George Markos completed intricate frescoes in 1735 that depict religious scenes in the church interior with impressive skill. These works show the Greek Orthodox artistic tradition of that period and reward close observation with their fine details.
