Cave of Euripides, Archaeological cave in Kolones, Greece

The Cave of Euripides extends 47 meters into the hillside with ten chambers, overlooking the Saronic Gulf on Salamis Island's south coast.

Archaeological excavations in the 1990s revealed stone tools, Mycenaean burials, and pottery dating from the Late Neolithic period to the 5th century BC.

Ancient writers recorded that the Greek playwright Euripides withdrew to this cave to compose his tragic works in contemplative isolation.

Visitors reach the cave through a marked footpath between Peristeria and Kolones, ending at a steel door that marks the entrance.

Archaeologists discovered a fragmentary black-glaze skyphos from the late 5th century BC bearing Euripides' name, suggesting devotional offerings to the playwright.
