Church of Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros Christianoupoleos, Eastern Orthodox church in Christianoupoli Messinias, Greece.

The Church of Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros Christianoupoleos is a Byzantine church at the western foot of Mount Aigaleo, about 12 km from Filiatra in Messenia. It belongs to the complex octagonal type with a narthex: two-storey side spaces flank the central dome to the north and south, and many large windows of varied shapes pierce the walls. The masonry is carefully laid in the brick-enclosed (plinthoperikleisto) system.

Built at the end of the 11th century, when the bishopric of Christianoupoli was raised to a metropolis, the church may stand on or near the ruins of an ancient temple of "Sotiras Dios". It served without interruption until 1825, was damaged in Ibrahim Pasha's Peloponnese campaign and lost its dome and south side to the 1886 earthquake. Declared protected in 1921, it was restored from 1938 and works, resumed in 1948-1950, ended in 2014.

Local tradition calls it "Agia Sotira sto Moria", set beside Hagia Sophia in Constantinople in a rhyme recited by villagers, a comparison of size and construction. The church was declared a protected monument in 1921. Restoration begun in 1938 was interrupted by World War II, resumed from 1948 to 1950, and was completed in 2014, 76 years after it started.

The comparison, made by ordinary believers, concerned size and construction. After the 1886 earthquake brought down the dome and south side, restoration ran, with interruptions, until 2014 — 76 years in all.
