St Nicolas Church of Piraeus, Greek Orthodox church near the harbor in Piraeus, Greece.
St Nicolas Church is a Greek Orthodox house of worship with a cross-in-square floor plan, four columns, and three domes, with the central elliptic dome topped by a lantern. The exterior features a three-column portico with decorated capitals and solid marble elements.
The third version of this church began construction in 1879 under architect Ioannis Lazarimos and was completed in 1902. The lengthy building process reflected the growing importance of the harbor and its community during that period.
The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, protector of seafarers, showing the deep bond between faith and this port city. You can see how this maritime connection shapes the way locals and workers from the harbor visit and use the space.
The church is located on Agiou Nikolaou Street in Piraeus and opens to visitors during the week while regular services take place. It helps to explore the area during daytime, as the setting near the harbor and waterfront adds to the experience.
The building features twelve decorated Corinthian capitals carefully crafted from solid marble. These fine stone details are often overlooked but deserve closer attention for their craft and skill.
