Pontic Greek Genocide Memorial in Piraeus, Greek genocide memorial in Alexandra's Square, Piraeus, Greece
The Pontic Greek Genocide Memorial in Piraeus is a large-scale steel and bronze sculpture shaped like a wave formation spread across a plaza. The artwork sits between two ancient harbors and opens toward the sea, allowing visitors to see the water directly from the site.
The memorial was unveiled in 2017 and honors the memory of those who died in Pontus between 1914 and 1926 during a tragic period. The sculpture was created as a response to these events and now serves as a place of remembrance.
Inside the sculpture, 17 artistic compositions depict the experiences of people who fled Pontus and sought refuge elsewhere. These artworks tell the story of displacement and arrival in a new place.
The memorial sits in a public plaza and is freely accessible at any time without restrictions or special requirements. Visitors should arrive earlier in the day or during quieter hours to experience the artwork and surroundings without crowds.
The sculpture carries the title Pyrrhic Flight and was created by artist Panagiotis Tanimanidis, a significant contemporary sculptor. The work was made possible through the support of a businessman whose family itself has historical connections to the region.
