Parnitha Sanatorium, Former tuberculosis sanatorium in Acharnes Municipality, Greece.
Parnitha Sanatorium is an abandoned tuberculosis clinic on Mount Parnitha in Acharnes Municipality, Greece. The four-story building shows modern architecture with large windows that once brought in daylight and fresh air.
The Greek state founded this facility in 1912 to treat tuberculosis and opened it to patients in 1917. After closing as a hospital in 1964, the building served as a hotel and housed the School of Tourism Professionals until 1985.
The Park of Souls across from the facility displays twenty wooden sculptures carved from trees damaged in the 2007 forest fire. Visitors can walk through this memorial space and observe the artwork among the stumps.
The abandoned structure stands near the road to Regency Casino Mont Parnes and is accessible to visitors. The site sits on a wooded hillside, so sturdy footwear can help when exploring the grounds.
The large windows and open balconies followed the medical belief of the time that fresh mountain air and sunlight helped heal tuberculosis. This design made the sanatorium an example of health-focused architecture in the early 20th century.
