Nea Philadelphia Grove, Municipal park in Nea Filadelfeia, Greece
Nea Philadelphia Grove is a municipal park located between the neighborhoods of Nea Filadelfeia and Nea Ionia, with green areas, walking paths, and cycling routes crossing the grounds. The paths connect different sections of the park, making it easy to move through the whole area on foot or by bike.
The story of this park began in 1914 when trees were planted on a bare hillside next to the Podoniftis stream, with a second round of reforestation work carried out in 1948. These two phases transformed a dry slope into the wooded park that visitors see today.
An open-air cinema inside the park has been running every summer since 1959, drawing neighbors for evening screenings under the open sky. It is one of the few places in the Athens area where this tradition of outdoor film watching has continued without interruption.
The park has several access points along Dekeleias Avenue, close to bus and trolley stops, so arriving by public transport is straightforward. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, which makes for a more relaxed walk through the grounds.
In 1966 a small artificial lake was built inside the park, complete with a windmill and fountains, an unusual feature for an urban green space of this kind in Greece. The windmill is still standing today and can be spotted from several paths across the park.
