Ellinikon International Airport, Former international airport in South Athens, Greece
Ellinikon International Airport was a large aviation facility in South Athens, Greece, with terminal buildings, runways, and support facilities located near the coast. The complex covered extensive grounds that served as a major hub for decades.
Operations began in 1938 as Kalamaki Airfield and continued until 2001, serving as Athens main aviation center for over 60 years. The closure came after a new airport terminal opened to replace it.
The terminal buildings displayed mid-century design and housed artworks showing how Greeks traveled through different periods. Visitors could see these artistic displays while walking through the historical spaces.
The site is partly accessible today with remnants of aircraft and infrastructure visible. Visitors should expect that some areas may be restricted as the location continues to develop.
Several abandoned aircraft remain on the former apron, including a Boeing 747-200 and a damaged Boeing 737-284A from Olympic Airways. These planes tell a story of Greece's aviation history.
