Myrtiotissa beach

Myrtiotissa is a beach on the western coast of Corfu, Greece, with golden sand stretching between tall, vegetation-covered cliffs. Large rocks emerge from the clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

A monastery from the 15th century sits above the beach, built by a monk named Father Daniel after a vision of the Virgin Mary in a local cave. The site became an important place for pilgrims and visitors over the centuries.

The beach takes its name from a nearby chapel and attracts visitors seeking a more open-minded environment, yet the location feels remote and secluded to most travelers.

Access is via a steep path from the main road, with parking available about one kilometer from the shore. Good footwear and time for the descent are necessary to reach the beach comfortably.

Writer Gerald Durrell described this remote beach in his works as one of the most beautiful places in the world. His books about Corfu made the location known to readers, though many visitors remain unaware of this literary connection.
