Almopia Cave Park

Almopia Cave Park, Höhle in Griechenland

Almopia Cave Park is a site with multiple caves located on the slopes of Mount Voras in northern Greece. The caves formed through the action of the Thermopotamos River on the rock and contain stalactites, stalagmites, and underground water features that create various chambers and narrow passages.

Scientific study of the caves began in 1990 when fossils of cave bears from the last Ice Age were discovered. Later excavations by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki uncovered many artifacts from the Stone Age and Byzantine periods, showing that humans inhabited the caves across thousands of years.

The park's name comes from the Almopia region where these caves are situated. Visitors can observe today how these spaces were used by people across thousands of years, from early hunters to Byzantine settlers, leaving traces visible throughout the cave interiors.

Visitors should bring comfortable shoes and a jacket since the caves are cool and pathways can be uneven. The park is only a few kilometers from the village of Kato Loutraki and is easily accessible, with hiking trails through surrounding forests offering additional exploration options.

The park contains fossil remains of ice age bears discovered in the cave now known as Bear Cave. In total, over 15000 fossils and artifacts have been collected from six caves, making this one of the most important paleontological sites in Greece.
