Egaleo grove, Urban park in Aegaleo, Greece
Egaleo grove is a public park in a western suburb of Athens that spreads across a large area between two major roads. The space features a diverse mix of trees including platanus, pines, olives, and acacias, along with planted paths and open areas for walking.
The site formerly housed a gunpowder factory that operated until 1970, when it closed due to safety concerns and community protests against repeated accidents. The transformation from this dangerous industrial facility into a green space marked an important shift toward protecting residents and improving the neighborhood.
The place serves as a gathering space for local residents who walk, rest, and spend time among the trees. Scattered throughout are sculptures and memorials that reflect the memory and identity of the surrounding community.
The park is situated near two metro stations, making it easy to reach by public transportation. The space offers plenty of seating areas and shaded spots to rest, and visitors can easily move through on foot.
Within the park lies a small protected biotope where land tortoises roam freely among thousands of trees. This unexpected presence of wildlife in a former industrial zone shows how nature has reclaimed the space.
