Dieffenbach-au-Val, Rural commune in Bas-Rhin, France
Dieffenbach-au-Val is a small commune in the Sélestat-Erstein district in the Vosges region that spreads over roughly 13 square kilometers at elevations between 230 and 560 meters. The village sits in Val de Villé, a narrow valley between forested slopes, where houses scatter along streams flowing through the terrain.
The village took shape under the control of the lords of Frankenbourg, a local noble family that shaped the valley. Power later passed to the counts of Oettingen before the territory eventually came under the Strasbourg bishopric.
The Saint Laurent Church shapes the village center with its 500-year-old design and distinctive choir tower rising above nearby houses. It reflects how deeply faith has been woven into local life across the generations.
The village is small and walkable, with most places reachable on foot in a short time. The settlement has limited public services centered in the middle, so check ahead if you need to handle official business.
A walking trail along Dieffenbach stream was created by local volunteers and features information panels about regional plants and wildlife. The path offers a different way to discover the valley's nature without special preparation.
