Chalmont, Mountain summit in Grand Est, France
Chalmont is a mountain summit in the Vosges rising to 718 meters and located within the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. The peak forms part of a ridge system connecting several other elevations in the area.
The mountain was established as a key waypoint on the GR532 long-distance hiking trail, which connects a network of peaks throughout the region. This trail was developed to make use of the natural ridge system in the Vosges massif.
The mountain carries two distinct names depending on the local language - Chalmont in French and Schalberg in German - reflecting the cultural diversity of the border region. This bilingual tradition appears on signposts and maps throughout the area.
The summit is accessible via marked trails starting from a parking area at the mountain base, with proper hiking gear recommended for safety. The trails remain open year-round but can become slippery during wet weather.
From the summit, there is a direct view of Rocher du Coucou, a distinctive rock formation to the east that showcases different geology. This nearby landmark is a popular waypoint for hikers who want to visit both locations in a single outing.
