Abbeville, Administrative division in Hauts-de-France, France
Abbeville is a town in the Somme department, northern France, not far from the English Channel coast. The municipality sits along the river Somme, which flows gently through flat countryside before reaching the sea.
The town received its foundation in the Middle Ages and developed early as a trading center along the river. During the Second World War it suffered heavy destruction, which required rebuilding much of the center afterward.
The administrative territory includes numerous rural communities that maintain traditional agricultural practices and local festivities throughout the calendar year.
The center is compact and easy to explore on foot, with several parking areas near the edges of town. Churches and public buildings are open during the day, and it helps to check ahead for guided tours or museum hours.
The name comes from the Latin Abbatis Villa, pointing to early monastic ownership. The position on the river made it a junction between inland areas and the coast for centuries.
