Yutz, commune in Moselle, France
Yutz is a commune in the Moselle department of the Lorraine region in northeastern France, located along the Moselle River near Thionville. It is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, ranging from older residential areas to parts that grew during the industrial era.
The area around Yutz was already settled in the Iron Age, as archaeological finds from the site confirm. In the 19th century, the arrival of factories and railway workshops brought rapid growth to what had been a rural settlement.
The name Yutz comes from the Latin Judiacum, meaning place of justice, pointing to an early role as a local seat of authority. Walking through the town today, you can see how older residential streets gradually give way to newer housing areas built during the industrial period.
Yutz sits right next to Thionville and is easy to reach by public transport from there. The different parts of town are comfortable to explore on foot, so flat shoes are a good idea if you plan to walk between neighborhoods.
Two Celtic bronze flagons found near the town's current area have been held in the British Museum in London since the 19th century. Known as the Yutz Flagons, they are considered among the earliest surviving examples of Celtic metalwork from the Iron Age.
