Tour aux Puces, Medieval fortified tower in Thionville, France
Tour aux Puces is a fortified tower in Thionville with fourteen polygon sides and a height of about 13 meters (44 feet). The walls are constructed from stones that progressively decrease in size from the base to the top.
The tower was built between the 11th and 12th centuries as a stronghold for the Counts of Luxembourg. It served as their administrative center until the 16th century, when its importance declined.
Inside the tower, eight thematic rooms display regional objects from prehistoric times through the Renaissance period. These collections show how people lived in this area throughout different eras.
The tower offers guided tours and educational workshops for school groups throughout the year. Plan your visit in advance, as access may depend on special hours or group bookings.
The name Tour aux Puces came from a translation mistake of the original Luxembourgish word Peetzsturm. The word actually meant Tower of the Well, not a reference to fleas as the French name suggests.
