Chapelle des Cordeliers, Gothic chapel and art museum in Sarrebourg, France
The Chapelle des Cordeliers is a chapel in Sarrebourg known for a monumental stained glass window. This main window stands approximately 12 meters high and 7.5 meters wide, weighing roughly 900 kilograms.
The chapel was founded in 1265 by Godefroy de Bliescastel as part of a monastery. Over the centuries, especially after the French Revolution, the building served as military barracks and stables before taking on its present role.
The chapel displays artworks by Marc Chagall, including his 1976 piece 'La Paix', shown alongside lateral stained glass windows he designed. Visitors experience these works within a sacred space that brings together art and spirituality.
The chapel is best visited during daylight hours to fully appreciate the stained glass and artworks. Plan to spend time looking at the windows and details without feeling rushed.
The main window was handcrafted by master glassmaker Charles Marq, taking two years of intensive work in the Simon workshop in Reims. This handmade creation shows the care that goes into traditional glassmaking craft.
