Château de Rothenbourg

Château de Rothenbourg is a castle ruin situated on a forested hilltop near Philippsbourg. The remains display sandstone walls and structural foundations from the early medieval period.

The castle was built in the 9th century and served as a refuge for the Bishop of Strasbourg during the early medieval period. It later became part of the regional power structures of Lorraine, changing hands among local noble families.

The structure earned recognition as a listed historic monument, representing the architectural practices of medieval French fortification systems.

Access to the ruins follows a steep woodland trail branching from the forestry road. The site is open during daylight hours and offers hikers a stop along the wooded landscape.

The castle lent its name to the Rothenbourg family, who later held estates in the region. This connection between fortifications and family identity shows how medieval strongholds often shaped local noble houses.
