Château de Rothenbourg, Medieval castle ruins in Philippsbourg, France
The fortress stands on Rothenberg hill, constructed with dressed sandstone blocks and featuring defensive structures from the medieval period.
The castle, established in the ninth century, served as a refuge for the Bishop of Strasbourg in 912 before his assassination.
The structure earned recognition as a listed historic monument, representing the architectural practices of medieval French fortification systems.
A steep path from the forestry road leads visitors to the castle ruins, which remain accessible throughout all hours of the day.
The castle transferred its name to the Blick de Rothenburg family, who maintained various fiefs from the Lords of Bitche until 1749.
