Digne-les-Bains, Thermal spa town in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France.
Digne-les-Bains is the prefecture of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and sits at 608 meters elevation between mountains. The thermal springs emerge at 50 degrees Celsius from 870 meters underground and supply the spa facilities in the town area.
In the first century the settlement was called Dinia and served as a Roman trade center. During the Middle Ages it became an episcopal seat and later was designated prefecture of the department.
The name derives from Latin Dinia and refers to the Roman past of the settlement. Today the town carries the suffix les Bains because of the thermal springs that have drawn visitors for centuries.
Two weekly Provençal markets take place in the town center and offer local products, fresh vegetables, and traditional crafts. The town serves as a starting point for walks into the surrounding mountains and sits along the Route Napoléon.
The Gassendi Museum was founded in 1885 and connects art with natural science through changing exhibitions. The collections preserve regional artifacts and natural history objects from the alpine valleys.
