La Baule-Escoublac, Coastal resort commune in Loire-Atlantique, France
La Baule-Escoublac is a coastal commune in Loire-Atlantique that stretches along a curved bay for several kilometers. The wide sandy beach is bordered by pine forests that protect the hinterland from sand drift and give the town its characteristic green frame.
The original village was buried by sandstorms in the late 18th century, forcing residents to retreat further inland. The modern seaside resort only developed in the late 19th century when wealthy visitors discovered the mild climate and wide beach.
The beach draws numerous visitors during summer months who use the wide shore for swimming, sailing and walking along the sand. Many families spend their holidays here in the villas and hotels that have shaped the resort life of the town for more than a century.
The town is reachable by high-speed train from Paris and by regional trains from Nantes, making access convenient. During the high season in July and August, the beach and central areas can become quite crowded.
The pine trees were systematically planted in the mid-19th century to stabilize the moving dunes that had previously threatened entire villages. Today this forest forms a natural protective wall of several hundred hectares that holds back wind and sand.
