The Citadelle de Sisteron stands on a rocky promontory, extending across 10 hectares with fortified walls overlooking the Durance River valley.
The fortress developed from the 13th to 16th centuries, incorporating various defensive elements including bastions, towers, and underground passages through different construction periods.
The citadel hosts summer performances, including theater productions, musical concerts, and raptor demonstrations within its ancient stone fortifications.
The monument maintains seasonal schedules, with extended hours from July through August, and provides guided tours on Wednesdays and Sundays from March to November.
The fortress features an underground staircase carved directly into the rock during the 19th century, connecting the citadel to the town below.
