Sisteron Citadel

Sisteron Citadel is a fortress built on a rocky hilltop above the Durance River valley with thick stone walls and several towers. The complex spreads across a large area with various structures, some designed for defense and others used as living quarters.

The fortress was built in the 13th century and later renovated by a French military engineer to make it stronger. It played an important role in controlling trade routes between two major regions of France.

The citadel hosts exhibitions that show how military life shaped the region and its people over centuries. Visitors can see objects and displays that reveal the daily realities of soldiers and residents who inhabited this fortress.

You can explore the fortress on foot and should wear sturdy shoes since there are many stairs and uneven paths. It helps to check opening times beforehand and find out whether guided tours are offered during your visit.

An impressive stone staircase was carved directly into the rock and connects the citadel to the town below. This work was hand-excavated in the 19th century and shows the great effort needed to make the fortress accessible.
