Sisteron, Fortified citadel town in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sisteron is a commune in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence where the Durance River flows between two mountain ridges. Above the rooftops of the town center, a fortress installation rises on a rocky hill that is visible from below for a long distance.
Roman inscriptions in the area testify to settlement more than 2,000 years ago. The Counts of Forcalquier had the fortifications laid out in the 11th century, which were later expanded several times.
The settlement sits on a historic passage route between the Alps and the Mediterranean coast that travelers have used for centuries. Narrow lanes in the old quarter climb toward the fortress, while newer districts spread along the riverbank.
Weekly markets take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays where regional produce is sold. The steep lanes in the old quarter require sturdy footwear, especially in rainy weather.
Napoleon Bonaparte rested here in 1815 on his return from exile on Elba. Today a commemorative plaque at this spot recalls his stay during the march toward Paris.
