Maisons-Alfort, Residential commune in Val-de-Marne, France
Maisons-Alfort is a residential commune in the Val-de-Marne department, located about 6 kilometers southeast of Paris on the right bank of the Seine. The commune spreads over a dense urban area with low-rise apartment blocks, parks along the river and some industrial zones on the western edge.
The name came from merging the old village of Mansiones with the hamlet of Alfort, which grew around the royal veterinary school in the 18th century. The union into today's commune happened during the French Revolution.
The École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort was founded in 1765 and still shapes the town with its historic buildings and medical teaching facilities. The Fragonard Museum displays anatomical specimens that draw students and professionals from across Europe.
Metro line 8 stops at three stations in the commune and links it directly to central Paris in about 20 minutes. The RER D line provides two additional stations for travel to southern and northern suburbs.
Buffalo Bill set up his camp in the commune for two months in 1905 while his Wild West Show performed in Paris. Thousands of spectators flocked to the performances featuring riders, bison and staged battles.
