Viaduc métro 8 de Charenton, Metro bridge in Charenton-le-Pont and Maisons-Alfort, France
The Charenton Metro Viaduct is a steel structure built on concrete supports that carries Metro Line 8 across the Marne River, linking Charenton-le-Pont and Maisons-Alfort. The bridge uses a continuous design that supports daily train traffic while allowing river boats to navigate underneath.
Construction of the viaduct began in 1968 and was completed in 1970, marking the first elevated metro structure in Paris since the early 1900s. The project enabled Line 8 to extend further into growing suburban communities.
The structure represents a milestone in Paris transportation development, enabling the extension of Metro Line 8 to serve growing suburban communities.
You can view the bridge from the train itself at either Charenton or Maisons-Alfort station, or from below along the Marne riverbanks. The riverside paths offer several good vantage points to observe the structure from different angles.
During a 2010 renovation, the viaduct received a striking blue-green paint treatment and was fitted with advanced noise reduction systems. This work made the bridge visually distinctive while significantly reducing the sound impact on surrounding communities.
