Eguisheim, Medieval village in Haut-Rhin, France

Eguisheim is a village built in concentric circles around a central square, with half-timbered houses painted in traditional Alsatian colors lining the streets. The buildings display classic regional architecture featuring bright facades and narrow passages that invite leisurely walks through the settlement.

The settlement developed around an 8th-century castle built by the Dukes of Alsace and became a regional administrative center over time. Viticulture gradually became the dominant economic activity, transforming the village landscape and shaping its character through subsequent centuries.

Harvest season fills the streets with grape baskets and conversations about varieties and quality as locals work the surrounding vineyards. Wine-making is woven into everyday life here, shaping how people spend their time and interact with the land.

The village sits next to marked hiking trails that wind through the vineyards and are easy to access from the town center. Several wine cellars throughout the settlement offer tastings and shopping, making daytime visits ideal for exploring both the village and surrounding paths.

White storks return each year to nest on rooftops throughout the settlement, a natural spectacle occurring here for generations. Visitors often spot these large white birds from the village center, particularly during nesting season in spring.
