Aiguille du Midi, Mountain peak in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France

The Aiguille du Midi is a mountain peak in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, reaching an elevation of 3842 meters and featuring multiple observation terraces with views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding Alpine peaks. The terraces spread across several levels and allow visitors to see the landscape from different angles.

The construction of the cable car system began in 1955, establishing a direct connection between Chamonix valley and the summit through a two-stage lift system. This project opened high mountain zones to visitors who previously could only reach them as experienced climbers.

The name Aiguille du Midi translates to 'Needle of Midday' as the sun aligns with the peak at noon when observed from Chamonix church. This alignment helped local communities mark time before mechanical clocks became common in the valley.

Visitors need warm clothing and sun protection as temperatures at the summit remain cold year-round, with frequent temperature differences of 20 degrees from the valley. The sun exposure is more intense at high altitude, so protection for eyes and skin is important.

The Step into the Void attraction presents a glass box suspended 1000 meters above the glaciers, allowing visitors to experience the mountain from a transparent platform. The structure was built to withstand extreme winds and temperature changes common at this altitude.
