In 1292, Jean I of Chalon granted a franchise charter to Orgelet, transforming it into a regional administrative center controlling twenty-nine villages.
The Church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption contains medieval floor tiles and houses the oldest organ in the Franche-Comté region.

Leon Bel, who created La Vache Qui Rit cheese brand, established his first Comté cheese business in Orgelet in 1865.
