Crolles, commune in Isère, France

Crolles is a small town in the French department of Isère, located about 20 kilometers northeast of Grenoble on the right bank of the Isère River. The area is framed by the Chartreuse mountains to the south and the Belledonne range to the east, offering a mix of residential areas, industrial facilities, and preserved farmland.

Crolles traces its roots back to the medieval period, as evidenced by the Abbey of Les Ayes, two castles, and a mill building that still stand today. The village evolved from purely agricultural settlement to a modern town blending farming with industrial activity, particularly since the rise of technology companies in the 20th century.

The name Crolles comes from a Latin word meaning skull, possibly linked to an ancient burial site in the area. Local residents, called Crollois and Crolloises, maintain a strong community spirit through regular markets, sports days, and cultural events that shape daily life.

The town is easily accessible by local bus connections and roads, with proximity to Grenoble for daily commutes. Visitors will find small shops, cafes, a swimming center, tennis courts, and a cultural hall seating 400 people for shows and concerts.

The town has more jobs than residents, an unusual feature that reflects an exceptionally active economy. This distinctive quality makes it one of the few places in the region where companies like STMicroelectronics, Teisseire, and Petzl are major employers.
