Paris Fire Brigade, Fire brigade unit in Paris, France
The Brigade de sapeurs-pompiers de Paris operates 81 stations across the city and neighboring departments, coordinating around 1,200 emergency calls daily. This network covers a wide area and relies on a broad range of vehicles and specialist units.
After the Austrian Embassy Fire in 1810, Napoleon ordered the transformation into a military unit. The battalion was formally established in September 1811 and has remained part of the armed forces ever since.
Members of this service belong to the French Army and wear military ranks and uniforms during public appearances. Their protection extends beyond the capital to specialized government facilities across France.
Firefighters must be French citizens aged between 18 and 25, hold a vocational certificate, and present a clean criminal record. A total of 8,550 personnel serve in this unit and cover all types of emergencies around the clock.
The unit also protects distant sites such as the Space Center in Kourou and the Military Rocket Test Centre in Biscarosse. These outposts highlight the nationwide role of the service beyond the capital region.
