Gargilesse-Dampierre, Historic village in the Indre department, France
Gargilesse-Dampierre is a small village in the Creuse valley with brown-tiled stone houses clustered around a historic castle and a Romanesque church.
The village gained recognition in the nineteenth century when French writer George Sand lived here and drew inspiration from its rural setting for her literary works.
The village hosts an annual harp festival each August, founded by world-renowned harpist Pierre Jamet who established the International Academy of Harp here in 1964.
The village is located in the Indre department at an elevation of 722 feet (220 meters) and is accessible from Paris via the A20 motorway in approximately two hours.
Gargilesse-Dampierre holds official designation as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France since 1982, recognizing its preserved architecture and traditional character.
