Laon Cathedral, Gothic cathedral in Laon, France

Laon Cathedral is a Gothic structure with five towers that rise above the town. The interior displays double-arched passageways and four large rose windows visible from each cardinal direction.

Construction began in the early Middle Ages, underwent major renewal after a fire in 1112, and was completed around 1230. This rebuilding shaped the Gothic style in the region for generations.

The cathedral's design reflects the spiritual importance Laon held during the Middle Ages, with stained glass windows and architectural details telling stories of faith and craftsmanship of that era.

You can access and explore the space at your own pace or join a guided tour. The building sits on a hilltop with steep approaches, so be prepared for a challenging climb.

Stone oxen carved into the western towers recall the animals that hauled heavy materials up the steep slope during construction. This unexpected detail reveals how this building's creation was tied to the everyday labor of the community.
