Chaudon-Norante

Chaudon-Norante is a rural commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence that spreads across mountainous terrain and connects several small settlements. The area is crossed by the Asse River and ranges from lower valleys to higher ridges, creating a varied landscape.

This area was long a remote mountain village where small farming and pastoral communities lived and adapted to the harsh alpine environment. During the Napoleonic Wars, Napoleon made a significant stop here on his return journey from Elba.

The three settlements of Norante, Chaudon, and La Clappe each have their own building styles that reflect how people adapted to mountain life over time. Walking through these hamlets, you can see how homes are built close together for protection and how locals have organized their spaces around what the land offers.

The place is best explored on foot, since the settlements are spread across mountain paths and have narrow, winding roads. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is uneven and the paths sometimes become steep.

The area contains Lake Norante and is part of the Geological Reserve of Haute-Provence, which preserves remains of ancient marine life. These fossils offer a rare glimpse into a time when this mountain region lay beneath the sea.
