Cascades of Hérisson, Natural waterfalls in Franche-Comté, France
The Cascades of Hérisson form a system of waterfalls in the Jura Mountains with multiple drops, the highest reaching about 65 meters. The water flows through a distance of roughly 3.5 kilometers, creating different sections with pools and rocky formations along the way.
These waterfalls were created long ago by glacial movements that carved out the Jura valleys during ice ages. Running water then shaped these cascades over thousands of years through constant erosion.
The name Hérisson comes from the ancient word Yrisson, meaning sacred water, which shows how local people once viewed this place as spiritually important. Visitors today still treat it with reverence when they walk through the waterfalls.
The area can be explored on a well-marked loop trail that connects all the waterfalls and runs for about 7 kilometers. You can start from several points like Doucier, Bonlieu, or Ilay, with parking available at different locations along the way.
The waterfalls transform dramatically with the seasons: after rain they flow with power, winter creates frozen ice formations, and autumn brings colorful surroundings. This changing appearance makes each visit feel like a different experience.
