Château de Lagarde

Château de Lagarde is a ruined castle with several towers and defensive walls spread across a hilltop with views over the Ariège valley southeast of Mirepoix. The remains reveal different construction periods, from early fortifications to later structures added during medieval times.

The castle was originally built in the 11th century as a watchtower for the King of Aragon. Later centuries saw the addition of square towers and other fortifications that strengthened its role as a military stronghold.

The castle served as a symbol of territorial control across centuries. Visitors can see how the layout and construction reflect the power that once centered on this hilltop site.

The site is best explored on foot, and reaching the ruins requires climbing a steep hillside where sturdy shoes are essential. The ruins offer little shelter from sun and wind, so bring water and dress appropriately for the conditions.

At the center of the main courtyard stands an old stone well that extends far below ground level. The thick walls of this structure reveal how much effort was invested in securing a reliable water supply.
