Château du Landsberg

Château du Landsberg is a medieval fortress in Alsace featuring two sets of defensive walls, a square keep, and decorated Romanesque windows overlooking the surrounding region. The structure clearly shows how the fortification was designed to protect several nearby monasteries.

Conrad de Landsberg built the fortress between 1197 and 1200 to protect the abbeys of Hohenbourg, Niedermunster, and Andlau from attacks. It was part of a larger strategy to secure church properties in the region.

The chapel features a decorated oriel window that shows how medieval residents designed their living spaces. You can still see fine Romanesque windows that reflect the way people lived across different periods.

The walk to the castle takes about 45 minutes from the parking area in Heiligenstein following the marked GR5 trail. The terrain is hilly, so wear sturdy shoes and plan accordingly.

The Türckheim family, who owns the castle today, conducts ongoing restoration and excavation projects that reveal new insights about the fortress. This active care allows visitors to experience a place that continues to evolve.
