Truttenhausen

Truttenhausen is a former abbey in Heiligenstein with standing medieval structures built across different periods. The church was reconstructed in 1468, while the Romanesque porch tower dates from 1490 and incorporates late Gothic details.

The abbey was established in 1186 by Abbess Herrade de Landsberg and housed Augustinian canons. It remained active until 1555, serving as an important religious center and pilgrimage destination.

The site was dedicated to Saint Nicholas and functioned as a spiritual center where monks lived and pilgrims found shelter. The layout reveals how medieval religious communities organized daily life around prayer and hospitality.

The site is private property where exterior viewing is the only option for visitors. The architectural remains are visible from the outer areas surrounding the grounds.

An English-style garden surrounds the site with century-old trees that have been maintained by the Turckheim family since around 1800. The mature vegetation creates a shaded setting for the medieval structures.
