Germ

Germ is a village in the high Pyrenees located on mountainous terrain at about 1160 meters elevation, marked by stone houses, narrow lanes, and several fountains scattered throughout. The settlement follows the natural slope of the hillside, with buildings and paths adapted to the steep topography.

The village developed as a typical mountain settlement in the Louron Valley shaped by pastoral farming and wood processing traditions. Over generations, it experienced the gradual population decline common to many rural Pyrenean communities.

The local church stands as the focal point where residents gather and where traditional stone architecture reflects generations of mountain living. The layout of narrow passages and communal fountains shows how people organized daily life around shared water sources.

The village is reached by following the road toward Col de Peyresourde from Louron Valley, with basic parking available near the center. The steep pathways call for proper footwear and time to explore the various corners at a relaxed pace.

Near the communal washhouse stands an old water-powered sawmill from the 1800s that powered local woodworking traditions. This structure reveals how residents once harnessed natural resources for their daily livelihoods.
