Chemin de Fer de La Mure, Historic mountain railway in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Chemin de Fer de La Mure is a historic mountain railway in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes that runs 30 kilometers through mountainous terrain. The line features five tunnels and three viaducts across the Isère region.
The railway was built between 1882 and 1886 and initially transported coal from local mining areas. It was converted into a tourist attraction in 1968.
The La Mine Image Museum along the route displays real anthracite mine galleries that tell the story of regional coal extraction across two centuries. Visitors can see the spaces where miners once worked in the preserved sections.
Visitors can purchase combined tickets that include both the train journey and museum admission. The train stops at several stations where exploration is possible.
At the end of the line sits the Grand Balcon viewpoint with views of the turquoise waters of the Monteynard dam. Designated platforms offer opportunities to observe this remarkable structure.
