Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes

Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes is a Baroque church in the 6th arrondissement of Paris with three levels that diminish toward the top and a triangular gable. It houses one of the earliest domes constructed in the city and displays the architectural style typical of its period.

Founded in 1613 by Marie de Medicis as part of a Carmelite convent, this church celebrated its first mass in 1620. The building emerged during a period when many religious institutions expanded their presence in the city.

The interior shows Baroque decoration with curved vaults and columns, along with paintings from the 1600s that fill the walls. These works reflect the artistic tastes and religious devotion of the period.

The crypt holds the remains of 114 priests executed during the French Revolution in 1792. This underground space serves as a solemn memorial to those who lost their lives during that turbulent period.
