Châteaux of the Loire Valley, Medieval and Renaissance castles in Loire Valley, France

The Loire castles stretch along the river in central France, combining medieval fortresses with Renaissance residential palaces. Visitors find over three hundred structures with towers, galleries, and landscaped gardens spread across several départements.

In the 15th century, the French royal court moved its seat to this area, triggering the conversion of old fortresses into residential estates. The royal presence lasted about a century and shaped the appearance of the entire region.

Many of the estates display Italian influences in their galleries and gardens, which remain visible during tours today. The facades often show royal emblems and stonework that visitors can examine up close.

Cycling routes along the river connect many of the estates, while organized day tours cover several castles in a single visit. Most buildings open year-round, though spring and autumn see fewer crowds than midsummer.

The Château de Montsoreau is the only castle built directly in the Loire riverbed and now houses a contemporary art museum. Chambord features a famous double helix staircase where two people can ascend and descend at the same time without meeting.
