Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport, International airport in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe.
Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport is an international airport in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, providing connections to Europe, North America, and the Caribbean. The facility features a long runway that can accommodate large aircraft, along with several terminal buildings housing counters, shops, and restaurants.
The airport opened in 1965 under the name Le Raizet and grew over the decades to become the second largest aviation site in the Lesser Antilles. Multiple modernizations expanded capacity and enabled service to intercontinental routes.
The terminal carries the name Pointe-à-Pitre after the nearby city and serves as a hub for travelers moving between Caribbean islands or flying overseas. Many visitors begin or end their journey through the French Antilles here.
The arrival and departure halls sit close together and feature clear signage, making it easy for travelers to find their way. Parking areas are located a short distance from the terminal, and inside the halls there are seating and waiting areas.
In January 2006, this airport welcomed an Airbus A380 during its testing phase, making it one of the first sites in the Caribbean to handle this large aircraft type. This event tested the runway's ability to support particularly heavy machines.
