Fromelles Military Cemetery, Military cemetery in Fromelles, France.
Fromelles Military Cemetery holds 250 graves of British and Australian soldiers arranged in a hexagonal layout that leads toward a central Cross of Sacrifice. A visitor center on the grounds provides information about the battle and the men buried here.
The cemetery opened in 2010 after discovery of mass graves containing soldiers who died in the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916. This marked the first new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery built in over 50 years.
The cemetery serves as a key place where Australian and British families and veterans gather to remember those who died in the 1916 battle. Visitors come to pay respects and connect with the stories of soldiers buried here.
The cemetery is easy to reach and located near the village of Fromelles in northern France, with adequate parking for visitors. Walking paths are clearly marked and the grounds are open to visitors throughout the year.
Many soldiers buried here were identified through DNA analysis after lying in mass graves for decades, allowing their names and identities to be restored. This scientific approach brought clarity to cases where records were incomplete or uncertain.
