V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Military cemetery and memorial in Fromelles, France.
V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial is a war graves site northwest of Fromelles containing approximately 410 burial plots of soldiers who fell during the July 1916 fighting. The grounds are orderly in layout with concrete crosses and flower beds arranged in regular patterns.
The site was built between 1920 and 1921 after heavy fighting in 1916 claimed many Australian lives. Most of the soldiers buried there could not be identified and were placed in communal graves.
The memorial bears the names of more than 1,000 Australian soldiers who fell and whose graves were never found. Visitors can trace the significance of this battle for Australian history through the inscribed records.
The cemetery is located a few kilometers northwest of Fromelles village and is accessible year-round for visitors. Walking paths lead through the grounds and there is ample space for quiet reflection.
What sets this site apart is the use of communal burial plots instead of individual headstones, since most soldiers could not be identified after the battle. This arrangement reflects how chaotic and devastating the fighting had become.
